HRC n Wafi City

Some time during Ramadhan, Ben n I went to Wafi City since it looked pretty cool in my Dubai Explorer guidebook. Bad idea. Most of the shops were closed for Ramadhan, and it was mid-noon and nowhere to makan. Wafi City is a shopping mall with an Egyptian theme. Part of it is shaped like a pyramid, and the main attraction is it’s indoor stained glass pyramid “dome” (ok, not dome, prism or whatever).

Raffles is opening a hotel next door, shaped like a pyramid too (currently under construction). Anyway, we searched the whole place and only found really expensive restaurants in the adjoining hotel that were open. It reached a point where Ben just stopped talking altogether (very rare moment) cos he was too hungry.

We finally found the number for Planet Hollywood that was nearby, and they were open! So we made our way there for late lunch. The Planet Hollywood here is like… so blast from the past, dude. It looks as though they got their décor and furnishings from another Planet Hollywood outlet that closed down two decades ago. But at least the food was not bad and affordable.

So we learnt a good lesson. Don’t go out jalan-jalan during Ramadhan unless you’re on a diet or willing to spend a lot of money for over-priced hotel food.

Some time in November, Ben n I went to Hard Rock Café for dinner cos we were in the mood for steak. The food was good, and the interior of course way better than Planet Hollywood’s. We’ll probably be back again cos it’s not too far from where Ben works and not too pricey. They didn't have a band performing that night, but as we were about to leave, they played YMCA, and all the HRC staff had to stand near the stage n do the YMCA dance. The staff looked like they just kena 'sabo'-ed, but it was entertaining to watch these two Japanese teenagers who joined them n went crazy with the song n routine. Very para-para.
